It’s official, Nokia Lumia 710 will come to T-Mobile

Nokia and T-Mobile announced today that the Nokia Lumia 710 will be the first Windows Phone from Nokia in the United States, arriving in January 2012. It is intended to target the nearly 150 million Americans who haven’t purchased their first smartphones yet. The Nokia Lumia 710 is capable of running on T-Mobile’s 4G network, and through this take advantage of the full social and Internet experience the phone offers, and also access popular smartphone applications and services from Windows Phone Marketplace.

The Nokia Lumia 710 is expected to be available at T-Mobile retail stores, select dealers and retailers nationwide, and online at: http://www.t-mobile.com starting January 11. The Nokia Lumia 710 is expected to cost USD 49.99 after a USD 50 mail-in-rebate card, with a two-year service agreement and qualifying Classic voice and data plan. MorpHex project spreads its legs and does a dance

In mid November, Kåre Halvorsen also known as “Zenta”, presented a new project, the MorphHex project. A spherical hexapod robot with a crab like movement, that now a few weeks later is ready to strut its stuff, and do a little dance. Starting with a 28cm in diameter globe from Toys r’ Us, the brainchild of Zenta has evolved into a quite an impressive robot.

NASA’s Voyager hits new region at the edge of our solarsystem

NASA‘s Voyager 1 spacecraft have now entered a new region between our solar system and interstellar space. The data obtained from Voyager over the last year reveals this new region to be a sort of cosmic purgatory. In this area the wind of charged particles streaming out from our sun has become calmer, our solar system’s magnetic field is piled up, and higher energy particles from inside our solar system appear to be leaking out into interstellar space.

Although Voyager 1 is about 18 billion kilometers (11 billion miles) from the sun, it is not yet in interstellar space. Based on the latest data collected, the direction of the magnetic field lines has not changed, indicating Voyager is still within the heliosphere, the bubble of charged particles the sun blows around itself. The data do not reveal exactly when Voyager 1 will make it past the edge of the solar atmosphere into interstellar space, but suggest it will be in a few months to a few years.

Nokia Store gives Belle option for Nokia N8

Nokia N8 and Symbian Belle? — Symbian Belle Shows up in the Nokia Store for Nokia N8

A question that a lot of Nokia users owning a Symbian^3 devices have been asking for a while now is: “when will Symbian Belle be released for my phone?”. There have been several indications that the update is soon to be released, among otherthings recently leaked version of Symbian Belle have shown up not only for the Nokia N8 like in the past, but now also for C7 and E6. Nokia have also recently released devices with Symbian Belle pre-installed, as an example the Nokia 700.

Now Nokia Store also gives a pretty strong sign that the wait might soon be over. If you visit the Nokia Store and on the top of the page select Set device, and choose Nokia N8 as your phone, you now get a second option asking if you are using Symbian Anna or earlier, or Symbian Belle. This addition is fairly new, and where probably added when the Nokia Store was updated recently.

Nokia Lights up London with Lumia, Deadmau5 and 4D

This week had an amazing start for the residents of London, courtesy of Nokia and Deadmau5. Seems Nokia and Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to make Windows Phone and the Lumia phones a success. It really shows that they both mean business and Nokia is ready to take back their crown as the number one smartphone manufacturer, a title they lost in the beginning of this year.

Using the Millbank Tower in Westminster near the river Themes in London as their canvas, Nokia with the help of Drive Productions, showed of an amazing effects show, accompanied by music from Deadmau5. The grand finale being the projection of a huge Nokia Lumia 800.

Adobe will contribute more to HTML5 and drop support for Mobile Flash

Adobe AIR and HTML5 — Adobe ends Flash for mobile, goes HTML5

Adobe have for more then a decade developed Flash, and with it enabling richer content to be created and deployed all over the web. Adobe Flash allowed designers and creators to develop more advanced content, reaching well beyond what browsers could do, and what HTML in the past was capable of. HTML has however evolved throughout the years, and long talked about HTML5 has finally started to be implemented all over the web. Adobe seems to realize that the journey for Flash, at least for mobile devices, has run its course and its time to embrace change, or disparate into the shadows of the Internets past.

Today HTML5 is universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively, and this forces Adobe to think about their strategy for the future. HTML5 is currently the best solution for creating and deploying content in a browser across mobile platforms. Since it’s already becoming a standard, Adobe has chosen to end further development of the Flash Player run in the mobile devices browser. They will however continue to provide solutions for known security issues and do minor bug fixes for existing Flash players. Future work with Flash on mobile plattforms will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. The development will end following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.

Asteroid 2005 YU55 approaches Earth for a close flyby

Today on Tuesday, November 8, an asteroid with a diameter of 400 meters will approach Earth’s atmosphere. Named Asteroid 2005 YU55, and deemed “potentially hazardous” by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Ma. will fortunately miss Earth by 0.85 lunar distance, or approximately 335,000 kilometers (208,000 miles).

The approach will mark the closest a known object with this size, has ever gotten to a collision with Earth since 1976. This will as far as we know, continue to hold true until Asteroid 2001 WN5 gets within 0.6 lunar distance in 2028. The Asteroid visiting this evenings was discovered 6 years ago in 2005, and was later named Asteroid 2005 YU55 accordingly. Since this discovery was done rather late, there is still possibility that scientists may find other large floating rocks heading our way before the arrival of Asteroid 2001 WN5 in 2028.

Spotify is officially launched for Windows Phone

Today at the Windows Phone press event in New York, Microsoft officially launched an application that a lot of users have been waiting for: Spotify for Windows Phone.

The application is looking very smooth, and like Windows Phone Mango in general, very snappy to use. It is also well integrated into the Metro UI making it look like a native application that just naturally belongs. The Spotify team has been working on this release since at least April, but after seeing the finished work it seems it was well worth the wait. In the application you can navigate by swiping back and forth in typical Windows Phone fashion between new releases, playlists, friend feeds, and more.

iPhone 4S battery and reception issues

Apple have now acknowledged that some iPhone 4S users are experiencing poor battery life with their new device. They attributes this to to bugs within iOS 5 and according to a statement sent to All Things D, Apple says that “a small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” A Beta version of iOS 5.0.1 have just been relased that should include the upcoming fix for the battery life.

Unfortunately there is not only issues with the battery life, but also the reception. In the Apple forums quite a few customers are also experiencing dropped calls and next to no reception. There seems to be a work around for this, that temporally solves the issue, but considering the previous ‘antennagate’ that Apple was faced with when they launched the iPhone 4, this is probably not the start they where hoping for with their new device.

First Vega launch vehicle arrive to Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana

At the 4th of October the first elements of Europe’s new Vega launch vehicle left Italy and began a long journey to Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. This marked the final step towards it’s inaugural flight in January 2012. After several intense weeks of checking the hardware and equipment, the Vega’s Zefiro-23 and Zefiro-9 motors and the AVUM fourth stage were carefully packed and left Avio’s facility in Colleferro, where they were built. The equipment was then loaded onto the MN Colibri, in preparation for its its journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

The equipment for the qualification launcher arrived at the Dégrad de Cannes Harbour in Cayenne, French Guiana, and was then taken by road to Kourou where it arrived at the 24 of October. The launch campaign will then start on 7 November 2011 with the transfer of the first stage to the launch pad. The first launch for the Vega launcher is scheduled for the end of January 2012.
