Nokia N9 started shipping to stores

The Nokia N9 have now started shipping to customers and stores. Pre-orders for the Nokia N9 started in many countries recently, and since the launch the device have created a huge buzz and positive feedback from both Nokia fans, and people that in recent years been more negative towards Nokia’s products.

“There is a lot of buzz around the N9 and the consumer demand has been huge,” says Product Specialist Risto Lahi from Nokia’s Flaghsip Store in Helsinki. “People love the new, button-free user interface and the intuitive way to browse the Internet. When they try out the device, they are first amazed and then impressed.”

Amazon unveils the new Kindle Fire

Amazon Kindle, Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire

Today Amazon finally unveiled their new tablet, the Kindle Fire. Based on Android, this device is not Amazon‘s way of giving up on people who like to read to read, but a complement to the existing Kindle devices, intended to take advantage of Amazon‘s growing streaming media library.

The Kindle Fire is a beautiful color Kindle that can be used for movies, TV shows, music, books, magazines, apps, games, web browsing and more. The Kindle Fire will be sold for only $199.

LiMo joining forces with MeeGo?

Something already mentioned more then a year ago by Sascha Segan at PCMag covering MWC (Mobile World Conference), might now actually become a reality. LiMo might join forces with MeeGo.

There has not been an official announcement yet, but rumors say that MeeGo is now planned to be merged with competing Linux based operating system LiMo. Japanese heavyweights NEC and Panasonic might be joining forces with Samsung from South Korea in the new MeeGo Merger. Intel and the LiMo Foundation have not yet commented on these rumor at this stage, neither have NEC, Panasonic or Samsung.

Lufthansa first to use biofuel in commercial flights

Lufthansa has become the first airline to run regular commercial flights using a mix of biofuel and kerosene in daily transfers between Hamburg and Frankfurt.

The six month trial will cover eight of its 28 daily flights of less than an hour between the two cities, which will according to Lufthansa reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1,500 tonnes during that period. As part of the burnFAIR project, a Lufthansa Airbus A321 (D-AIDG) will fly regularly between Hamburg and Frankfurt, using fuel that contains a 50-percent share of biosynthetic kerosene in one engine.

ACL from OpenMobile lets Android applications run on MeeGo

OpenMobile lets Android apps run on MeeGo

The Linux-based operating system MeeGo might soon get a great vitamin boost in the form of ACL, a software solution from a company called OpenMobile.

ACL, that stands for Application Compatibility Layer, allows users to run Android applications seamlessly on MeeGo. The applications are installed alongside native applications, and once installed it’s hard to tell the difference between native MeeGo, and Android applications. The applications will run in full-screen mode, just as they would on a Tablet or an Android phone.

Nokia N900 application powers portable brain scanner

For the first time it’s now possible to use a smartphone as part of a portable brain scanner that lets you monitor your neural signals on the go, New Scientist reports.

By connecting a commercially available EEG headset to a Nokia N900 smartphone, Jakob Eg Larsen and his colleagues at the Technical University of Denmark have managed to create a completely portable system.

Wearing the headset and starting up the application, creates a simplified 3D model of the brain that lights up as brainwaves are detected. This is the first time a smartphone has been used to power the EEG headset. The headset monitors the electrical activity of the brain and is normally intended to connect via USB to a USB receiver plugged into a PC.

NASA satellite UARS expected to crash somewhere on Earth end of September

UARS – Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite

NASA‘s Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere in late September or early October 2011, almost six years after the end of a productive scientific life.

It is too early to say exactly when UARS will re-enter and what geographic area may be affected, but NASA is watching the satellite closely. Currently it could land anywhere between 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south of the equator – most of the populated world. NASA say the risk to public safety or property is extremely small, approximately just 1 in 3,200.

Other World Computing launches first 6Gbps replacement SSD for MacBook Air

Other World Computing on the 15 September announced the industries first 6GB/s replacement SSD for the 2011 Apple MacBook Air, the Mercury Aura Pro Express 6GB. Available in 120GB and 240GB capacities, the new drives combine a SandForce 2200-series controller with Tier 1/Grade A NAND memory to achieve up to 507MB/s read speeds and 454MB/s write speeds, which is about twice as fast as the stock drive in thr MacBook Air.

Dean Kamen the inventor of the Segway scooter have dreamed up an inflatable mobile wind turbine that also can provide an eye-catching advertising platform.

The concept of an inflatable wind turbines may not be an entirely new idea, but the prolific inventor Dean Kamen has detailed one of a slightly different sort. Not only is it mobile and can generate electrical energy for general use, but it can also provide a platform for advertising, and provide public information announcements.

Nokia launches Nokia Car Mode with support for MirrorLink

Nokia continue adding support for new technology and standards in their mobile phones and now also adding support for MirrorLink with their latest Nokia Car Mode application. Nokia Car Mode makes it easier for drivers and passengers to access maps, satellite navigation (provided by Nokia Drive), traffic updates, music and voice calls when they are in vehicles, so there’s no need for a separate music player or satnav. All the smartphone features and services are designed and to optimise the usability in the car and avoid driver distraction.

The application is written in Qt and will first be available for the Nokia 600, Nokia 700, Nokia 701, but also earlier smartphones once they get upgraded to Symbian Belle. Nokia Car Mode will also be available for Nokia N9. MirrorLink™ (previously known as Terminal Mode) has been developed with the objective to provide a technology, which will offer seamless connectivity between a smartphone and the in-vehicle infotainment system.
